Ah man, I know what you’re thinking just another article about everyone’s favorite topic right? WRONG. I am here to share a bit about my journey with student loans and share tips I wish I knew sooner as a person of color.
For starters, student loans after you graduate will suck the soul out of you. Most say, oh someone will pay it back but not me though. For me, this wasn’t an option I HAVE TO PAY OFF MY STUDENT LOANS in a quick and timely fashion because well…. let’s just say I’m not in an ideal living situation.
Hi, my name is Geraldin and welcome to my life. I am 23 years old and live at home with my mom in New York. I share a bedroom with my mom. Yup, I said it, I share a bedroom with my mom that means we sleep in the same bed every night. I don’t have my own privacy. I work out of my living room which also happens to be my exercise and thinking space. How ideal right? (Although I am grateful my mom hasn’t kicked me out this is not the life I want to live a year from now)
This has been my motivating factor to get my shit together. Right after graduating Binghamton University in May 2019. I had aspirations of paying off my student loans by October 2019. Clearly we know how that turned out if it’s February 2021 and I’m still at home.
Some things I wish I knew sooner…
My starting debt balance was $41,562.32 and that’s not including credit card debt which I have already paid off in full. The tips above are what has allowed me to bring my balance down to what it currently is $26,000. I still have a ways to go but my debt pay off date is June 16, 2021 and by the power vested in me this will become a reality.
Some of the things I did in addition to what I shared above was publish a book about how to navigate life after college which could be found at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. In addition, I started to invest my time with more people who were where I want to be or headed in the same direction as me. You need to be around people who motivate you and inspire you to reach your goals. For me this meant spending time alone, watching/studying lots of videos/books and getting the right mentors.
I started my debt pay back journey in August of 2020 and I am hoping to say goodbye to student loans just a year short of that in June 2021. These are just some tips and tricks I used to help propel me towards my goal. If you want to see more of my journey check me out on Instagram @geraldinnoemis till next time friends :)
