Don’t think about becoming a writer, just start writing! Like many skills, the craft of writing has to be developed. I started free writing in my journal to help gather my thoughts and create clearer sentences with them. Sharing the entries with my friends made me realize I had a niche for this. Before I knew it, I was writing journal entries that were publish-worthy. If you want to start a career in writing, I say start exactly where you are and let your interests guide you.
There are so many different genres to write for because most businesses have blog pages on their websites. If you’re into wellness, beauty, fashion/lifestyle, there is certainly an opportunity for your writing to be published. However, before getting published it is best to have a couple of work samples that you feel most proud of.
I started off in college by writing with my club, Her Campus. That experience gave me the opportunity to grow as a writer and determine what kind of writing I enjoyed most. After strengthening my writing, I had the opportunity to intern for PIX11 News, where most of my writing consisted of script writing. During a conversation about the media industry, I remember being told by my supervisor,
“If you can’t write, you won’t succeed and that goes for any career.”
That was my motivation to take my writing more seriously.
Today, writing is the foundation for so many careers! Writing itself is a full-time career with plenty of freelance opportunities. If you have a love for words and have been thinking about starting your career in writing then START. Here are some tips:
