“From the time I could remember, money has always intrigued me—how to make it. How to save it. How to invest it.”
The financial well-being of African Americans straggle behind that of the White United States population. MilleniVision was able to interview Latoya Westbrooks, UX Researcher at Facebook and Founder at Wealthly. Here at, Wealthly, Latoya shortens the financial knowledge disparities in communities such as mine. In a world of ageism, racism, and educational gaps, Latoya Westbrook has set out to create stepping stones for generations to come.
What we should know about Latoya?
What does she do?
Latoya works in the tech industry as a UX Researcher which means she:
Why did she start?
To start, Latoya went to school for finance and has worked for over 10 years in this field (Citigroup and J.P Morgan just to name a few).
BUT, after working for all of these other people, she had acquired all of this wealth of knowledge and realized she wanted to educate her community. Her community more so looked like women, Black people, and immigrants. This was her way of finding that intersection with her job and how to give back to the community. So to speak, to build a bridge for people of color to enter business and tech with relation to their cultural journey. She wanted to help her community by fixing their credit and business banking. Over the years, she had learned that people of color would start businesses but the business would not generate money. These businesses did not know how to grow and scale their business because they didn’t have the education needed to avoid these problems.
Seeing how the older generation at her job did not want to teach her how to do certain activities, she learned that to truly be free,
“You need to have more than one source of income and you need to have a business of your own. Always be prepared financially.”
