We want to start with a couple of questions, for thought:
MilleniVision was able to sit down and speak with one of the best solutions to these questions: Dr. Nadia Lopez, the woman who knew it was time to solve these very problems.
Opening a school in one of the most underserved communities in New York City -- Brownsville, was one of the toughest issues Dr. Nadia Lopez was eager to fix. In 2011, Dr. Lopez was finally able to open Mott Hill Bridges Academy in the neighborhood of Brownsville in Brooklyn, NY. For those who are unaware, Brownsville is an area that is often overlooked when it comes to funding and development to improve the current circumstances. Understanding the complexities of this neighborhood, inspired Nadia to open a school right in the heart of it.
Before this vision came to life, Nadia first served as an Assistant Principal at a school in Brownsville. Talking to students and hearing the things that went on in their neighborhoods was disheartening to Nadia. It was clear that school gave these students a break from the troubles around them.
“Simply taking them over to the Brooklyn Bridge gave them insight on what is possible beyond where they live”,
said Nadia. Too often, kids feel stuck in their limitations. Exposing students to places beyond their communities offers a sense of hope and inspiration that they can become more than what they see happening every day. Part of that can be experienced through education.
Dr. Lopez goes on to explain that education is the foundation to a child’s success. However, many school’s that exist do not promote innovation and creation that can advance ALL students. With New York City being one of the most segregated school systems in the country, Black and Brown students are usually the last to be thought of. That was another problem.
It was crucial for Nadia to fix this problem. Coming into the education system as a career changer was only the beginning. The school Nadia envisioned one day creating was to be looked at as an environment that was nurturing, supportive, and NOT thinking inside of a box.
An opportunity arose for her to join New Leaders which aided in her growth to becoming a Principal, she immediately began to write her proposal. Knowing exactly what she wanted for the school, helped but creating a team to push this vision was beyond her imagination.
As mentioned, in January of 2011, Mott Hall Bridges Academy was created. Since then she has become a game changer in the education system and has received numerous awards and recognitions including Black Girls Rock with BET.
“The future of education looks like change. It looks like the possibilities of truly liberating children & creating opportunities that everyone can benefit from.”
