Carlos, the Author of The End of Marketing: Humanizing Your Brand in the Age of Social Media and AI, joined us to give us key points on how to better market yourself. With decades of social media experience with brands such as LinkedIn, Mr. CEO himself has created a full-service digital marketing firm by learning from life. As soon as you read the first line of his book, it’s already a marketing strategy. Historically, we used to view brands such as Starbucks as the ones influencing people on what to do and eat. However, in this new day and age, Carlos has shown us that people are now the brands and we are the influencers. For marketing to work in this age of social media, companies have to learn how to humanize their brands.
Building The Brand.
When we look at our top social media gurus and marketers, you don’t observe someone with the name, look, or sound that Carlos has. With that being said, Carlos took it upon himself to write a book about a topic that has been written and spoken about a thousand times but this time around it's made readily accessible and reader-friendly to people who look just like him and beyond.
So what exactly did Carlos do?
Carlos used the internet to gain attraction for what he was working on. By going online and posting an online job board all over LinkedIn, he was able to find unemployed people to travel to his website. For a year, he worked effortlessly to continue building his brand with no pay. He would even hold “pink slip parties” which were events that would bring people together in person to bring media coverage to his business. This gave him the grassroots marketing that he needed to launch his brand. In just four years, other companies started taking notice of what he was doing and backing him up with $$$$$. Fast forward, he ended up working at top companies. Once he had established his brand and network, more people wanted him to speak at conferences. Setting up his foundation and honing in on his craft has helped him elevate into new rooms and even new business.
The journey into Marketing
In 2008, during the recession, Carlos had lost his job in banking. This was the beginning of the hard hard work that was put into building the successful foundation he has today. By starting a company in 2008, he was forced to understand and learn how to market his products. You are the face of your brand and when people think of the work that you are doing, they can automatically attribute it to that of your personality. There is no such thing as separating your business brand and personal brand because all together you are one person. As Carlos says,
“It’s B******T to even think so.”
However, the key is: how you want people to perceive you on different channels of social media.
What you need to build up your brand
You are the conductor of your will so you should tell your story in a way to build community. You can do that by letting people get to know you personally, have people endorse your plentiful achievements, and letting yourself become vulnerable enough to engage with people you want to build those relationships with.
